Instructional ArchitectureJurassic Thinking Cycle™

The methodology that separates structured thinking from surface fluency.

The Jurassic Thinking Cycle™ is not a teaching style. It is the instructional architecture through which Jurassic English™ moves students from text comprehension to moral evaluation to evidence-based argument — at every level, in every lesson.

The Problem with Generic ELT

Most English programmes produce test results. Very few produce thinkers.

The standard ELT model optimises for measurable output: scores, pass rates, level progressions. What it rarely measures — and rarely builds — is the capacity to reason, evaluate evidence, and argue from a position. That is the gap Jurassic English™ was designed to close.

Test-Prep Mimicry

Students learn to replicate answer formats without developing the reasoning behind them. Fluency becomes performative. The gap between language ability and thinking ability widens with every level.

Teacher-Dependent Delivery

When methodology lives inside individual teachers rather than a shared curriculum framework, quality becomes a function of who is in the room. Programmes cannot scale what they cannot codify.

Comprehension Without Critique

Reading programmes that stop at literal recall produce students who can decode text but cannot interrogate it. Critical thinking is not a bonus stage added at higher levels. It is the point of the lesson — at every level.

The Jurassic Thinking Cycle™

Four stages. One architecture. Every lesson.

The Thinking Cycle is the instructional sequence that structures every Jurassic English™ lesson. It is not an overlay applied to content — it is the architecture through which content is taught. The sequence is not optional. Each stage builds on the last.

Stage 01

Analyze

What is the text doing, and how is it doing it?

Students encounter the text as a structured object. They identify what is being said, how it is constructed, and what choices the author has made. This is not comprehension — it is the first act of critical engagement. The text becomes something to interrogate, not simply decode.

Stage 02

Evaluate

Is the argument sound, and what does the evidence actually support?

Students assess the quality, validity, and intent of what they have read. They are asked to judge — not just describe. Is the argument sound? Is the evidence sufficient? Does the author's perspective contain assumptions? This stage builds the habit of calibrated scepticism.

Stage 03

Justify

What is my position, and how do I defend it with evidence?

Students construct and defend a position using evidence from the text. They learn that argument is not opinion — it is a claim supported by reasoning and evidence. The writing produced at this stage is academically structured, not spontaneous expression.

Stage 04

Reflect

What does this text reveal about a question that matters beyond the page?

Students consider what the text, the discussion, and their own argument reveal about a broader question — ethical, social, ecological. This is the stage at which English becomes a vehicle for moral reasoning, not just linguistic performance.

Authentic Literature

The text is not the vehicle. The text is the methodology.

Jurassic English™ uses authentic literature — real books, not controlled readers — because the complexity that drives reasoning cannot be manufactured. Simplified texts produce simplified thinking.

Complexity That Earns Its Place

Authentic texts contain the authorial choices — structure, perspective, tension, ambiguity — that make the Analyze and Evaluate stages meaningful. There is nothing to evaluate in a text written to be easy. The difficulty is the point.

Moral and Ethical Material

Literature from diverse traditions and ecological contexts provides the material that makes the Reflect stage academically serious rather than decorative. The texts are selected for the questions they raise, not only for the language they contain.

CEFR Progression Through Reasoning Demand

Progression in Jurassic English™ is tracked through text complexity and reasoning demand — not simply vocabulary load or grammar scope. A student's CEFR level is a description of what they can think through, not only what they can say.

Regulation Before Reasoning

The cognitive layer that most curricula skip entirely.

The Jurassic Thinking Cycle™ operates on a principle that is rarely foregrounded in ELT: students cannot reason effectively if they are dysregulated. Emotional and cognitive regulation is not a welfare consideration — it is an instructional prerequisite.

Dysregulation Blocks Reasoning

A student who is anxious about being wrong cannot evaluate an argument — their cognitive resource is allocated to self-protection, not reasoning. Treating this as a discipline or motivation failure is both inaccurate and counterproductive.

Ambiguity Tolerance Is Teachable

A student who has not learned to tolerate ambiguity will resolve a complex text by choosing the simplest interpretation. That is not a reading failure. It is a regulatory one. The Thinking Cycle builds ambiguity tolerance systematically, not incidentally.

Teachers Are Prepared, Not Just Informed

Jurassic English™ teachers are prepared in co-regulation techniques and the distinction between a reasoning failure and a regulatory one — so that their intervention is accurate, targeted, and does not inadvertently penalise a student for a cognitive state rather than a cognitive gap.

Methodology Fidelity

A methodology is only as strong as the governance that protects it.

The Jurassic Thinking Cycle™ is a precise instructional architecture. When it is applied inconsistently — adapted freely by individual teachers, compressed for time, or layered on top of an existing programme without structural change — it stops working as designed.

01

Sequence Integrity

The four stages are sequential, not optional. Skipping Evaluate to reach Justify faster produces argument without calibration. Compressing Analyze into comprehension produces students who defend positions they have not properly examined. The sequence is the methodology.

02

Teacher Preparation

Teachers require explicit preparation in the Thinking Cycle before delivering it to students. A teacher who has not been trained to facilitate Evaluate cannot model it — and cannot distinguish a student who is struggling with the text from a student who is struggling with the cognitive demand of the stage.

03

Institutional Architecture

Methodology fidelity requires that the curriculum framework — not individual teacher preference — governs what happens in the classroom. This is what the WorldWise Learning institutional model provides: a shared architecture that survives staff turnover, scales across centres, and can be audited.

The Next Step

If the methodology is right, the entry point is straightforward.

Jurassic English™ and WorldWise Learning offer structured institutional entry points — designed to move from first contact to pilot in a defined sequence. The Discovery Call is where your specific institutional context is assessed against the framework in detail.
