AI scoring for IELTS Speaking: how to use it well

Mr. Jay Adams · founder of Jurassic English™ Product details and prices checked against jurassicenglish.com on 14 October 2026. Jurassic English™ is independent and not affiliated with British Council, IDP or Cambridge University Press & Assessment. Every AI score mentioned here is a practice estimate, not an official IELTS score.

Key facts

  • An AI score for IELTS Speaking is a practice estimate, not an official IELTS score, and cannot be used for admission, placement or employment.
  • AI is useful for two things: repetition, and pointing to one priority with evidence from your own answers.
  • AI does not replace a live listener for pronunciation or two-way interaction. Typed answers cannot be assessed for pronunciation.
  • Use it well: read the range, not one number; check the evidence; pick one priority; practise on new questions; re-measure.
  • Jurassic AI Speaking is for adults 18+, from 79.000₫ for a Basic report. For a live human assessment: the Live Speaking Baseline, 690.000₫, about 15–20 minutes.

"The AI gave me 6.5. Will I get 6.5 in the test?" Nobody knows in advance. What matters is what the number is for.

What an AI score is, and is not

Only the official test produces an official IELTS score. Everything else is an estimate of which band range today's answers show. Three things follow.

  1. AI can only judge what it receives. Typed answers carry no sound, so no pronunciation. A recording adds delivery measures, but it is still a machine measuring a file, not a person listening.
  2. One number can mislead. Speaking is rated on four equally weighted criteria, and one mock is a small sample. An honest estimate comes with a range, wider when there is less evidence.
  3. Do not compare numbers across tools. Track progress with one tool, one mode (typed with typed) and new questions.

What AI does well

  • Repetition: a full three-part mock whenever you want.
  • Evidence: verbatim quotes from your answers instead of "be more fluent".
  • One priority: a well-designed tool picks the change worth making first.

What AI cannot do yet

  • Pronunciation needs a listener. The public descriptors frame it around how easily a listener understands you. In Jurassic AI Speaking, speaking mode is a limited beta and its pronunciation figure is a practice estimate from beta measures.
  • Two-way interaction. In Part 3 the person asking reacts to what you just said. A fixed mock trains structure, not that exchange.
  • The cause of a pause. AI can measure where you pause; as our own AI Speaking page says, that does not tell us why. A listener can probe.
  • Your result. No tool or person knows your test score in advance.

Six steps to use any AI Speaking practice well

  1. Check what the tool received. If typed, ignore any pronunciation conclusion. If spoken, record somewhere quiet with a headset.
  2. Read the range, not one number. A 0.5 change between two mocks is usually within normal variation. Track specific indicators instead.
  3. Check the evidence. Is the quoted sentence really yours? Is the comment tied to it, or generic advice that fits anyone?
  4. Pick one priority. Ask: "If I could fix one thing in the next few weeks, what would lift the most criteria?" Note one strength to keep.
  5. Practise structure on new questions; do not memorise rewrites. If a tool rewrites your answer as a "higher band version", read it to see how an idea develops, then practise a sequence of thinking. We use A-R-E: Answer, Reason, Example. It is not a script.
  6. Re-measure after two or three weeks, same mode, new questions. No change after two re-measures? Time for a live listener.

Also read the privacy notice. With Jurassic AI Speaking, answer text goes to an AI provider outside Vietnam; text and report are deleted automatically after 30 days.

Illustrative example

From the illustrative sample on our AI Speaking page; not a real learner, not a model to memorise. Suppose you say: "I don't think so… [2.9s pause] because teachers have empathy, you know, and students need human guidance when they are stressed." The longest pause sits between opinion and reason, so the priority is organising that step, not vocabulary. Practise Answer → Reason → Example on unfamiliar questions, then check whether that pause is shorter on new questions.

Jurassic AI Speaking for adults (18+)

  • A full IELTS-style mock, Parts 1–3, with 5 question sets; each new mock uses one you have not taken, where possible.
  • Answer typed or spoken (speaking mode is a limited beta).
  • Your report: a practice estimate per criterion with an uncertainty range (typed answers use three criteria; when evidence spans more than one band, it may show only the range), verbatim evidence, your clearest next priority, one strength to keep, and a practice action with a way to tell whether it improved. You can ask a teacher to review any report.
  • Three levels, same band at each: Basic (1 credit: estimate, priority, next step), Intermediate (2 credits: where marks are lost, charts, three interventions), Advanced (3 credits: full criterion-by-criterion breakdown and a 4-week plan).
  • Prices (pricing page, 14 October 2026): 1 credit 79.000₫ · 3 credits 199.000₫ · 10 credits 549.000₫. Credits last 12 months, are used when a mock starts and are returned automatically if our scoring fails.
  • Sample reports show one test answer at all three levels, scored by offline demo rules rather than the paid AI scorer, so their bands are illustration only.
  • Under 18? Jurassic AI Speaking is not for you; parents can look at our teacher-led Young Learners programme.

When you need a live assessor: the Live Speaking Baseline

  • One live conversation in three parts, timed like the IELTS Speaking test, assessed live by Mr. Jay on Google Meet. About 15–20 minutes.
  • Four criterion bands, an overall band and a written plan built on your weakest criterion.
  • Two parallel forms of equal difficulty, so a later re-test measures you, not a different test.
  • No AI: nothing about the session is sent to an AI service. Recording is optional and only with consent.
  • 690.000₫. A Jurassic English practice assessment, not an official IELTS score.

FAQ

Is AI scoring of IELTS Speaking reliable? It is a practice estimate. Its value depends on what the tool received, whether it shows a range, and whether it cites your answers. Use it to choose what to practise, not to predict your test.

Is an AI score an official IELTS score? No. Jurassic AI Speaking scores are AI practice estimates and no band is promised.

Can AI assess pronunciation? Not from typed answers. From recordings it can estimate some features; ours is a beta. If pronunciation is your priority, get a live listener.

Should I memorise answers the AI rewrites? No. Practise Answer → Reason → Example on new questions.

How often should I take an AI mock? One to find a priority, two or three weeks of practice, one to re-measure.

Is Jurassic English linked to British Council, IDP or Cambridge? No. Jurassic English™ is independent, and this advice is unofficial.
