Why learners in Singapore consider IELTS
Singapore has specific English-test rules for some international-qualification applicants. The NUS English-test document updated in September 2026 gives separate overall, Reading and Writing requirements. NTU’s admission guide gives a general international-qualification standard that includes Speaking. This is why a single national “required band” is misleading. Find the qualification category and the course first; if the receiving institution accepts a different English test, its admissions page is the authority.
The NUS and NTU documents illustrate different component emphases. An applicant to NTU should pay particular attention to its published Speaking condition, while an NUS applicant should check the Reading and Writing conditions as well as overall. The Speaking angle in Singapore

For an NTU applicant the useful reference is the institution’s Speaking condition and a real spoken sample. For an NUS applicant, keep its Reading and Writing components in view while deciding whether Speaking coaching is the most useful expenditure. A teacher can listen to whether the learner answers the question, develops a reason and manages a follow-up. Notes on a screen may organise content, but only spoken work reveals how the idea comes across in time.
How online coaching works for a Singapore learner
Take the NUS or NTU requirement that fits your qualification to the first session. Record a natural reply to a question you have not prepared. The teacher diagnoses one observable feature, such as a missing explanation or a weak link between examples. Work on a clear structure, practise it aloud with guidance, then attempt another question independently. Re-measure the feature you selected rather than chasing a number from one short sample. If NTU’s Speaking condition applies to you, keep it visible during planning. If NUS is your destination, keep its Reading and Writing requirements alongside any Speaking work.
