Key facts
- IDP Vietnam lists computer-delivered Academic and General Training in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang.
- Its page showed VND 4,664,000 on 2 Nov 2026, with a VAT note ending 30/06/2025: confirm the price.
- Speaking is a face-to-face session with a trained examiner, on the test date or within a week either side (IDP Vietnam).
- ielts.org says scores are comparable across formats and computer results arrive 1 to 5 days after the test.
Is it available, and where?
IDP Vietnam says its tests are held regularly in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang. The ielts.org listing for IDP in Da Nang shows Academic and General Training on computer and a Writing on Paper option, and a British Council centre listing for the British University Vietnam centre shows computer-delivered tests. We could not load British Council Vietnam's own pages, so check them directly if you plan to book there.
What does it cost?
IDP Vietnam's booking page listed VND 4,664,000 for Academic and General Training, and the ielts.org listing for the Da Nang centre shows VND 4,664,000 for computer and VND 5,252,000 for the UKVI version. The same IDP page includes a VAT note valid to 30/06/2025, which means the page may not have been updated since. No page we found shows an effective date for the fee. The booking screen is the only price that counts.
What is different from paper?
ielts.org says the move to computer does not change the skills assessed or the test construct, and that scores are comparable across formats. On the day, answers are typed on screen (IDP), you can write notes on a notes sheet in Listening, a clock shows the remaining time, and an automatic word count shows in Writing (IDP Malaysia's description of the same format).
What happens with Speaking?
The Speaking test is a face-to-face session with a trained IELTS examiner (ielts.org), in a private, quiet room (IDP). IDP Vietnam says it is conducted on the official test date or within one week before or after. Plan the extra day if your Speaking slot is not the same morning.
When are results ready?
ielts.org: 1 to 5 days after the test for IELTS on computer. We could not find a Vietnam-specific figure on a page we could verify, so ask your centre and keep a margin before any deadline.
What do I bring?
IDP Vietnam says candidates may bring only the original identification document or passport that was used to register. ielts.org adds that your belongings stay outside the test room and a clear bottle of water is allowed.
What about "Writing on Paper"?
ielts.org says that in selected countries you can take IELTS on computer and complete the Writing component by hand. It does not name the countries on the page we checked. The ielts.org listing for IDP Da Nang shows Writing on Paper among its test types, so ask IDP Vietnam when you book if you want that option. Everything else, including Speaking, is as above.
A short checklist for the week before
- Open your booking confirmation and note the date, time, centre and your Speaking slot.
- Check that the name on your ID matches your booking.
- Try an official familiarisation test on screen (IDP offers them; see its site).
- Practise Speaking out loud, with a timer, three times.
- Sleep: the Listening, Reading and Writing parts run back to back.
How do I avoid the wrong website?
IDP Vietnam has warned about fake emails and impersonation of its registration pages. Open the registration page yourself and read our scams guide for Vietnam.
How should I prepare?
Practise typing, read on a screen, and prepare Speaking as a conversation. Use the Part 2 timer, what to fix first and the band score calculator to plan your target.
