IELTS for UKVI in Malaysia: a booking checklist, and how to tell if you need it

This is a checklist page. Work down it in order: it will tell you whether to book, what to have ready, and what to confirm before you pay. Every fact is from the official page named in the box at the end.

Key facts

  • IDP Malaysia says IELTS for UKVI is the same test as standard IELTS in format, content, scoring and level of difficulty.
  • The Academic fee on IDP's Malaysia page was RM935 on 2 Nov 2026 (the same page's FAQ gives an approximate USD figure and says to check the booking system).
  • Upload a scanned passport or MyKad, and bring the same ID on test day.
  • It is taken in person at an official centre; formats are paper-based or computer-delivered.
  • Whether you need it at all depends on your UK visa route: check GOV.UK.

Checklist 1: do you need it?

  • Write down your visa route (Student, Skilled Worker, family and so on). GOV.UK lists the routes that need a Secure English Language Test, and says the level depends on the route.
  • Student applicants: GOV.UK says you can pass a SELT, but degree-level applicants may instead have English assessed by their education provider at CEFR B2. Ask your university in writing which it accepts.
  • Look at the approved providers for people outside the UK on GOV.UK: PSI Services (UK) Ltd, the IELTS SELT Consortium, LANGUAGECERT and Pearson. IELTS for UKVI is the IELTS option. Choose on your route and your provider's requirement.

Checklist 2: before you book

  • Book the UKVI version, not standard IELTS: only approved tests count.
  • Decide paper-based or computer-delivered. IDP Malaysia offers both for UKVI Academic.
  • Do not phone the test centre to arrange a SELT: GOV.UK says to book through the approved route.
  • Check that the name on your ID matches your application and booking exactly.

Checklist 3: the seven steps on IDP Malaysia's page

  1. Confirm you need IELTS for UKVI.
  2. Choose the test format.
  3. Select your test date and location on IDP's schedule page.
  4. Register online with accurate details.
  5. Upload a scanned valid passport or MyKad.
  6. Pay the test fee: RM935 for UKVI Academic when we checked.
  7. Wait for the confirmation email with your test details.

That page's FAQ gives an approximate USD figure and tells you to rely on the booking system for the exact price. Believe the booking screen over any summary, including ours.

Checklist 4: what is different on the day

IDP Malaysia lists enhanced security for UKVI: CCTV, ID checks, biometric scanning and video monitoring, and a Test Report Form specific to UKVI. ielts.org describes it as an extra layer of security required by UKVI. GOV.UK says the identity document must be original, current and valid, with a photo and the same name as your booking; abroad, a passport is accepted, and emergency travel documents are not. IDP's tips say to bring the same ID used at registration, a copy of your confirmation, stationery for paper-based tests, and to arrive at least 30 minutes early.

Checklist 5: results and what comes after

IDP Malaysia's UKVI page does not state a results time, so confirm it when you book. Your result can be sent to organisations through IDP's e-delivery. For the UK visa itself, GOV.UK's guidance for your route says how recent your result must be and what level it must show.

Checklist 6: protect your booking

  • Reach IDP's registration page yourself from ielts.idp.com/malaysia, not from a message or an advert.
  • The IELTS owners say not to trust anyone trying to sell IELTS results or test papers. Read our scams guide for the warning signs the owners publish.
  • Keep your payment confirmation, your booking email and a photo of your ID document together in one folder until the visa decision.
  • If you must change your date, do it inside the booking account, not by chatting with an agent.

Speaking: where candidates lose marks they did not expect

Because the test is the same, the Speaking test is the same three-part conversation. Candidates preparing for a visa often over-prepare vocabulary and under-prepare timing: use our free Part 2 timer, and read how to move from 6 to 7 and the Malaysia guide for local test context. Any practice estimate is not an official score.
