Key facts
- IELTS for UKVI is one of the UK government's approved secure English tests (the approved list names the "IELTS SELT Consortium").
- It must be taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre.
- IDP says it is the same test as standard IELTS in format, content, scoring and difficulty; the extra is security, and the Test Report Form looks slightly different.
- IDP Philippines lists the Academic fee at PHP 16,230 (seen 2 Nov 2026; check the provider).
- Your route decides whether you need any secure test at all: check GOV.UK.
Step 1: do you need a secure English test?
GOV.UK explains that you usually need to prove your English when you apply, and the test you need depends on the route. For these routes you need a test covering reading, writing, speaking and listening: Health and Care Worker, High Potential Individual, Innovator Founder, Minister of Religion, Scale-up Worker, Skilled Worker, Start-up, Student, and one temporary-work route. For other routes (for example some family and settlement routes) the test covers speaking and listening only. GOV.UK says to see the guidance for your own route to find the level you need, and we do not repeat score tables here because they change.
The Student route is the one that surprises people. GOV.UK says you can prove your English by passing a SELT from an approved provider, but not always: if you are applying for a course at degree level or above, your education provider may assess your English itself, and it must still be equivalent to CEFR level B2. Ask your university which it will accept before you pay for any test.
Step 2: IELTS for UKVI or something else?
IELTS for UKVI is only one approved option. For people outside the UK, GOV.UK names four approved providers: PSI Services (UK) Ltd, the IELTS SELT Consortium, LANGUAGECERT and Pearson. GOV.UK also says only the tests and levels it specifies are approved, so book the exact approved test, not a similar-sounding one.

| Security | Standard | An additional layer of security required by UKVI |

Step 3: booking with IDP in the Philippines
- Choose the format. IDP Philippines lets you select IELTS on Computer or IELTS on Paper for the UKVI Academic test. It says computer gives quicker results, typically within three to five days, and more test dates. Its General Training page gives a different figure, so confirm the result time for your own booking.
- Pick a date and location in IDP's UKVI schedule.
- Register online in the IDP registration portal, create an account and upload your ID; IDP's guide says to finish within 30 minutes.
- Pay online or offline. IDP lists IELTS for UKVI (Academic) at PHP 16,230 and the One Skill Retake at PHP 10,250 when we checked. Its General Training UKVI page shows PHP 16,230 in the fee list and a different approximate figure in a FAQ, so trust the booking system, not a summary.
- Keep the confirmation email: IDP sends your booking and test details after payment is confirmed.
GOV.UK adds a rule that people often miss: do not contact the test centre directly to arrange a SELT; book through the approved route.
Step 4: your ID
IDP Philippines lists accepted IDs as a passport valid for at least six months, the Philippine National ID (card version), or a PRC, SSS, GSIS or UMID card showing your birth date, and tells you to bring the same ID you registered with. GOV.UK's own rule for SELTs is stricter in wording: the document must be original, current and valid, with a photo, in the name you booked with. Abroad, GOV.UK accepts a passport, and emergency travel documents are not accepted. Check both lists before test day.
What stays the same, and what to practise
Because the content is identical, preparation is identical. The Speaking test is the same face-to-face conversation in three parts. If Speaking is your weakest skill, start with what to fix first, time Part 2 with the free Part 2 timer and read the Philippines guide for local fees and timing. Practice scores from us or anyone else are not official.
Common mistakes
- Booking standard IELTS when the route needs a SELT. Only the approved test counts.
- Assuming every Student visa needs one. Degree-level providers may assess English themselves at B2.
- Paying through a link in a message. See our scams guide.
- Using a different ID on test day from the one you booked with.
