Key facts
- IDP Malaysia's fee table showed RM 960 for IELTS on Computer (RM 1,065 for the UKVI version) on 2 Nov 2026; another IDP page still showed RM 835.
- IDP Malaysia lists ten computer locations, from Subang Jaya to Tawau.
- ielts.org says Speaking is face to face with an examiner; one IDP Malaysia page mentions video calls.
- Results: ielts.org says 1 to 5 days; IDP Malaysia pages say 2 days and 3 to 5 days.
What is the same as paper
IDP Malaysia says the test format, question types, time allocated to each part, and content are the same on computer as on paper, and ielts.org says scores are comparable across formats. The differences are on the screen: answers are typed, there is an automatic word count, a clock shows the remaining time, and headphones are always provided. Phones, pagers and smartwatches must be switched off and left with your belongings.

| Page | What it showed on 2 Nov 2026 | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| IDP Malaysia fee table | IELTS on Computer RM 960; UKVI on Computer RM 1,065; UKVI Life Skills RM 880 | Treat as current but confirm |
| IDP Malaysia "IELTS on computer" page | Describes the fee as typically the same as paper, at RM 835 | Looks out of date |
| Booking system | The price you actually pay | Believe this one |
IDP's fee page also says IDP may review fees if deemed necessary, and gives a transfer or cancellation fee with five weeks' notice: read the terms before you pay.
Where you can sit it
IDP Malaysia's computer page lists Subang Jaya, Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Penang, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Ipoh, Kepong, Melaka and Tawau. Dates are shown on IDP's booking page; one IDP page says registration closes four days before the test date, subject to availability. Candidates outside the Klang Valley should book early because there are fewer sessions.
Results time: three answers
ielts.org says computer results are available 1 to 5 days after test completion. IDP's global page says typically 1 to 5 days. IDP Malaysia's computer page says three to five days, and a second IDP Malaysia page says within two days in one place. The honest summary is "a few days": plan your application deadline with a week of margin.
Speaking: one more disagreement
ielts.org: face to face with a trained examiner. IDP's global page: a private, quiet room, on the test day or up to 7 days before or after. One IDP Malaysia page says Speaking may be by video call with an examiner who is not at the centre. We cannot resolve that for you: read the exact details in your booking confirmation. Either way, it is a conversation with a person, and it needs a different kind of practice from the typed parts. Read IELTS online test: what a practice test misses in Speaking.
ID and test day
You must bring the same passport or national identity card you used to book, and IDP Malaysia asks for a scanned colour copy at registration. ielts.org says to leave belongings outside the room and that a clear bottle of water is allowed.
Official practice: try the screen before the day
IDP Malaysia's computer page says you can try the note-taking and highlight functions in IDP's familiarisation tests, and its menu lists IELTS familiarisation tests for Malaysia. Use one before you pay for a date: it takes the surprise out of the layout, the timer and the typing. A familiarisation test is not a scored mock, so it will not predict your band, and it says nothing about Speaking.
A note on "Writing on Paper"
ielts.org describes an option in selected countries to take IELTS on computer and complete the Writing component by hand. It does not list the countries on the page we checked, so do not assume it is offered in Malaysia: if you strongly prefer handwriting, ask IDP Malaysia before you choose a session.
