Computer-delivered IELTS in the Philippines: what changes, hour by hour

Most worry about computer-delivered IELTS is really worry about the unknown: where do I type, what happens to my notes, do I speak to a screen? This page follows a test day in order, and for each moment says what is the same as before and what is different, using the official pages only.

Key facts

  • ielts.org says IELTS is moving to computer delivery (paper withdrawn from mid-2026, timelines vary by market) and that scores are comparable across formats.
  • Answers are typed on screen; Speaking is still a face-to-face session with a trained examiner.
  • IDP says computer results are typically available in 1 to 5 days.
  • IDP Philippines announced PHP 14,470 for standard IELTS on computer from 1 July 2026. Check the provider.

Before the day: what has not changed

The IELTS owners say the move to computer does not change the skills assessed or the test construct. IDP Malaysia puts it plainly for its own page: the format, question types, time for each part and content are the same. If you have studied for the paper test, your preparation still applies. The same ID rule applies too: ielts.org says to bring the same identification document you used when you booked. IDP's Manila listing shows sessions marked "Writing on computer", and ielts.org lists a separate option to write the Writing part by hand on selected markets, so read your own booking carefully.

Arrival and check-in

You leave your belongings in a safe place outside the test room (ielts.org). A clear bottle of water is allowed; IDP Malaysia says phones, pagers and smartwatches must be switched off and left with your belongings. IDP Malaysia says the centre provides pens and paper, and that headphones are always provided for IELTS on computer. Check your centre's list for anything else.

Listening: typing and a notes sheet

All answers are typed on the screen, and IDP says you can write notes on a notes sheet during Listening. IDP also describes a note-taking and highlight function and the option to change settings such as font size. The part that matters for you is practice: type answers quickly and spell carefully, because you type them as you listen. Our notes on practice tests and what they miss explain why familiarity with the screen is not the same as being ready.

Reading: the clock and the screen

IDP Malaysia says a clock shows the remaining time. The time allowed for each part is the same as on paper. Practise reading on a screen for an hour before test day if you normally read on paper.

Writing: word count

IDP Malaysia says an automatic word count feature is shown as you write. It does not tell you whether your answer is good, only how long it is. Typing speed matters more than most people expect for Task 2.

Speaking: still a person

ielts.org: the Speaking section is a face-to-face session with a trained IELTS examiner. IDP's global page says it takes place in a private, quiet room, on the test day or up to 7 days before or after your test date. One IDP Malaysia page describes Speaking by video call in some cases, which does not match ielts.org, so for your own booking read the details you receive and ask your centre. If Speaking is where you need help, our what to fix first guide and the free Part 2 timer are a good start.

After: results, fee and old paper results

ielts.org says computer results are available 1 to 5 days after test completion. IDP's article on the Philippine price change lists PHP 14,470 for standard IELTS on computer from 1 July 2026. Fees and dates change: check the provider.

What if you wanted the paper test?

ielts.org says IELTS is no longer offered as a paper-based test from mid-2026, with exact timelines varying by market. We found no official Philippine date, so read your own booking: the session list on IDP's Manila page marks computer sessions, and IDP's price article for the Philippines lists the computer fee. If your plan depends on paper, ask the centre before you pay.

A short checklist

  • Practise typing answers and reading on a screen.
  • Bring the same ID you booked with.
  • Leave phones and watches off, with your belongings.
  • Prepare Speaking as before: it is a conversation, not a screen task.
  • Book only through the official registration page; see our scams guide.
