Choose your format
The British Council UAE's locations page says it offers IELTS tests in 40 locations and that you can take IELTS on computer or IELTS on computer with Writing on Paper, which is not available for UKVI tests. In the second option the Listening, Reading and Speaking parts are as normal and you write the Writing part by hand; ielts.org describes this as available in selected countries. The booking page still says "either on paper or computer", while ielts.org says IELTS is moving to computer delivery with timelines varying by market, so look at the format shown for your own session before paying.

What is the same, what changes on screen
ielts.org says the move to computer does not change the skills assessed or the test construct, and that scores are comparable across formats. IDP describes the on-screen differences: all answers are typed, you can write notes on a notes sheet during Listening, and there is a note-taking and highlight function. Practise typing and reading on a screen before the day. Our Malaysia guide and Philippines guide compare the same points for IDP.
Speaking: still a person
ielts.org says the Speaking section is a face-to-face session with a trained IELTS examiner. IDP's global page says it takes place in a private, quiet room, on the test day or up to 7 days before or after your test date. Read the details in your booking confirmation. If Speaking is your weakest skill, start with what to fix first.
Results: where the British Council pages differ
The results page says "if you take IELTS on computer, your results will arrive typically within two days" and lists IELTS on computer (including UKVI) as within 1 to 5 days after the test. Computer results are electronic only: you download the eTRF from the Test Taker portal about 1-2 days after the test and can send it to organisations or have it sent directly. The fraud-awareness page, however, says computer results are shared in 5-7 days. Plan your application deadline with a week of margin.
ID and booking
Bring the valid ID you registered with (the page names a passport or Emirates ID) and a bank card for online payment. Without valid ID you cannot sit the test. If you need the UK visa version, read the UKVI guide for the UAE, and for safe booking the scams guide.
A checklist for the week before
- Open your booking confirmation and note the date, time, centre, format and Speaking slot.
- Check that the name on your ID matches your booking exactly.
- Practise typing and reading on a screen for an hour, and speak your Part 2 answers aloud with a timer three times.
- Leave belongings outside the room on the day: ielts.org says personal items stay outside the test room and a clear bottle of water is allowed.
- Keep the confirmation and payment record until your result is released.
