Key facts
- IELTS for UKVI is one of the approved Secure English Language Tests (the approved list names the "IELTS SELT Consortium"), taken in person at an official centre.
- The British Council UAE listed IELTS for UKVI on computer (Academic and General Training) at AED 1,680 on 2 November 2026; standard IELTS on computer was AED 1,590.
- Writing on Paper is not available for UKVI tests.
- Your visa route decides whether you need any test at all: check GOV.UK.
Step 1: do you need a secure English test?
GOV.UK says you usually need to prove your English when you apply, and the test depends on the route. For Health and Care Worker, High Potential Individual, Innovator Founder, Minister of Religion, Scale-up Worker, Skilled Worker, Start-up, Student and one temporary-work route, you need a test covering reading, writing, speaking and listening. For some other routes, such as citizenship and settlement, the test covers speaking and listening only. GOV.UK says to read the guidance for your own route to find the level.
The Student route has an exception. GOV.UK says you may prove English with a Secure English Language Test, but if you are applying for a degree-level course or above, your education provider may assess your English itself, and it must still be equivalent to CEFR level B2. Ask your university in writing before you book.
Step 2: is IELTS for UKVI the right test?
GOV.UK names four approved providers for people outside the UK: PSI Services (UK) Ltd, the IELTS SELT Consortium, LANGUAGECERT and Pearson, and says only the tests and levels it specifies are approved. IELTS for UKVI belongs to the IELTS SELT Consortium. ielts.org says UKVI accepts it only when taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre, and describes an additional layer of security. Choose between the providers by what your route and receiving organisation require, not by price alone.

To book, use the British Council UAE booking page, choose the UKVI test, bring a valid ID and a bank card for online payment, and use the payment reference format the page gives. The page says candidates under 18 need written parental consent and the test is not recommended for under-16s. Our lessons are for adults 18 and over.
ID on test day
The booking page says to have a valid identification document, such as a passport or Emirates ID. ID details are given at registration and presented on test day; you do not upload a copy. Without valid ID you cannot take the test and are not eligible for refunds or transfers. GOV.UK's own rule for secure tests is that the document must be original, current and valid with a photo; check both before test day, and never contact the test centre to arrange a secure test except through the approved route.
What stays the same
The Speaking test is the same three-part conversation with an examiner. Preparation is the same as for standard IELTS: use the Part 2 timer, read how to move from 6 to 7, and see our UKVI guide for the Philippines and for Malaysia for how IDP describes the same test. Any practice estimate is not an official score.
Booking safely
Book only through the official page you reached yourself. Read the UAE scams guide: the British Council warns about fake certificates and about anyone promising a higher score.
