Key facts
- British Council Thailand: "from 22 March 2026, all IELTS tests will be delivered on computer".
- It says IELTS on computer offers the same test format, questions and scoring as IELTS on paper.
- Fee on 2 Nov 2026: 8860 THB for Academic or General Training on computer (UKVI 9750 THB).
- Results: "Typically receive your results in 1-2 days".
- Speaking is still a face-to-face session with an examiner (ielts.org).
What the British Council Thailand page says
The page announces the switch and says IELTS on computer offers the same test format, questions and scoring as IELTS on paper, with significant benefits at no additional cost, the first being faster results: typically 1-2 days. It lists IELTS Academic and General Training on computer at 8860 THB, UKVI versions at 9750 THB (Bangkok - Siam), and UKVI Life Skills A1 at 7520 THB. Locations shown include Bangkok (Siam Square) and, in the north, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. It also shows a promotional fee with a code, which we do not rely on. Our UKVI guide for Thailand covers the visa version.
What stays the same
ielts.org says the move to computer does not change the skills assessed or the test construct and that scores are comparable across formats. Time allowed, question types and content stay as before. If you studied with paper practice, your preparation still applies, but add screen practice.
What changes on screen
IDP describes the on-screen format: all answers are typed, you can write notes on a notes sheet during Listening, and there is a note-taking and highlight function with adjustable settings such as font size. Type your Writing answers in practice; speed and accuracy matter. Compare how IDP describes this in our Malaysia, Philippines and UAE guides.
Speaking: still a person
ielts.org says Speaking is a face-to-face session with a trained IELTS examiner. IDP's global page says it takes place in a private, quiet room, on the test day or up to 7 days before or after your test date. Read your booking confirmation for your slot. If Speaking is your weakest skill, start with what to fix first.
Results and planning
The British Council says typically 1-2 days; ielts.org gives 1-5 days after test completion for IELTS on computer. Plan university or visa deadlines with a week of margin.
If you studied for the paper test
Most older Thai study material assumes a pen, a question booklet and a transfer of answers at the end. On a computer-delivered test the sequence of tasks is the same, but your habits change: you read from a screen, you move between questions with a mouse, and you type your two Writing answers. Three adjustments help most. First, do at least two full timed reading sessions on a screen, because eye fatigue shows up in the last passage. Second, practise typing Task 2 in forty minutes without checking the keyboard. Third, keep Speaking practice separate and spoken: reading your answer silently is not practice. None of this is an official requirement; it is our teaching advice, and an official familiarisation test from IDP or the British Council will show you the real layout.
A checklist for the week before
- Note the date, time, venue, format and Speaking slot from your confirmation.
- Check that the name on your ID matches your booking, and check the booking page for the documents it accepts (we did not find the Thai ID rule on the page we read).
- Practise typing, reading on a screen, and Part 2 answers aloud with a timer.
- Leave personal items outside the room: ielts.org says belongings stay outside, and a clear water bottle is allowed.
Booking safely
Book through the British Council Thailand or IDP site that you typed in yourself. ielts.org says not to trust anyone trying to sell IELTS results or test papers; see the UAE scams guide for the British Council's own fraud warnings and the Thailand guide for local context.
