Key facts
- IELTS for UKVI is one of the approved Secure English Language Tests (GOV.UK names the "IELTS SELT Consortium"); ielts.org says it is taken in person at an official centre.
- British Council Thailand, 2 Nov 2026: IELTS for UKVI Academic or General Training on computer 9750 THB, listed at Bangkok - Siam; UKVI Life Skills A1 7520 THB.
- From 22 March 2026, the British Council Thailand says all its IELTS tests are delivered on computer.
- Whether you need a test depends on your visa route: check GOV.UK.
Step 1: do you need a secure English test?
GOV.UK says you usually need to prove your English when you apply. For Health and Care Worker, High Potential Individual, Innovator Founder, Minister of Religion, Scale-up Worker, Skilled Worker, Start-up, Student and one temporary-work route, the test must cover reading, writing, speaking and listening. For routes such as citizenship and settlement it covers speaking and listening only. GOV.UK points you to the guidance for your own route for the level.
For the Student route, GOV.UK says you can pass a Secure English Language Test, but applicants for degree-level courses or above may have English assessed by their education provider, which must still be equivalent to CEFR level B2. Ask your university in writing which it accepts before you pay for a test.
Step 2: is IELTS for UKVI the right test?
For people outside the UK GOV.UK names four approved providers: PSI Services (UK) Ltd, the IELTS SELT Consortium, LANGUAGECERT and Pearson, and says only the tests and levels it specifies are approved. IELTS for UKVI is the IELTS option. IDP describes it as the same test as standard IELTS in format, content, scoring and level of difficulty; ielts.org says UKVI requires an additional layer of security, so the test must be taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre.

What to do next
- Write down your visa route and the exact English requirement from GOV.UK or your university.
- Open the British Council Thailand page yourself and check the UKVI test, venue, date and fee.
- Book, keep the confirmation, and use the same ID on test day.
- Allow a margin for results: the page says typically 1-2 days, but plan with more.
Preparing for the Speaking part
Speaking is the same three-part conversation as standard IELTS. Time Part 2 with the free timer, read how to move from 6 to 7, and see how IDP describes the UKVI test in our Philippines, Malaysia and UAE guides. A practice estimate is not an official score. Read the Thailand guide for the local context, and book only through the official page you reached yourself (warning signs).
